Chia seeds are the edible seeds of the Salvia hispanica (Mexican Sage) plant. The word “chia” is derived from the Nahuatl word chian, meaning oily. Chia seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids; the seeds yield 25–30% extractable oil, including α-linolenic acid.
